I beat it on the default Wicked difficulty with 685,880 points
Since they're available in this collection (SEGA Genesis Collection (PSP)), I made use of Save States. I don't think I could stick with it to the end without them.
What starts out fun becomes a slog as the levels become pretty boring with the same enemies over and over. I think there are 12 stages, with 4 boss stages, and this is just too many due to the repetitiveness of the stages. There's only a single bonus stage that you can access on multiple stages, which is extremely boring (you just sit in the middle of the screen and shoot at things that come at you from the 4 cardinal directions or things spiraling in at you) and I believe just gets you more points. There are lots of hidden areas, but when the stages have a relatively short time limit, it kinda discourages you from searching for them. The end boss is only difficult because of the tornado you fight on top of bouncing you up and, as far as I can tell, you have no control during this. So, you have to hope you land on a rooftop, otherwise you get bounced up again, and repeat until you die or get lucky.
Just remove the time limit and I probably would have found it to be much better.
