First time I've played this in about 15 years. For me, it's a step down from the first two. The introduction of being able to save anywhere markedly reduces the difficulty (that chest automatically kills who opens it? No problem, because I saved right before opening it). The answer to every riddle and every password is given in a certain area. You can also exploit how the monsters approach your party, in most cases eliminating the danger of enemies that use ranged attacks; as well as how the game treats terrain changes between your party and the enemies.
For its time (1991), it was a great game (I believe some publications named it RPG of the year). For most people, this would be a pretty good starting point for the series. Without a walkthrough, it'll take you about 40-60 hrs (depending on how much time you reload to try to get better stuff from chests, monster drops, etc.). I put in just over 50 hrs.
The first time I played it back in the early '90s, I would have given it a 10/10. Now, I would give it a 7/10.
