This was my 3rd time beating it.
While there's nothing really groundbreaking about it, with the battle positioning being about the only thing that sets it apart from the standard JRPG of the day, it's just a really fun game to play. The battles are brisk, the music is great, it requires zero grinding (unless you just HAVE to buy every new piece of equipment along the way, which is far from required to survive), and the characters are fun (something I rarely care about). Ghaleon has some of my favorite bits in any game.
About the only things I can fault it for are that it's way too easy and Working Designs went overboard on the pop culture references. Many of the references are just dialog that fits the situation with no mention of the source, so if you aren't familiar with what it's referring to, you probably wouldn't think twice about it. It almost became a game to me finding all the references and thinking "Aha! I know that reference."
I did have to hook up my JVC X'Eye for the first time in about 5 years after about the 5th time it froze up after a battle, as well as freezing a few times during other screen transitions, on my Model 1 Sega CD.
